"I find refractive surgery to be far and away the most gratifying (and at times the most demanding) part of my entire practice of ophthalmology; the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the patients is what drives me to stay at the forefront of this field and to being committed to delivering a quality surgical outcome."
Dr. Franklin W. Lusby M.D. is a renowned, highly qualified specialist in laser refractive surgeries. His extensive experience can be traced back to the beginnings of modern vision correction procedures and he has performed more than 25,000 refractive surgeries in the United States, Mexico, and China.
The history of LASIK can be traced back to the 1960s when the first microkeratome (tool used to cut thin corneal flaps) was developed. This procedure, called keratomileusis, was the first step in the advancement of vision correction. Then in the 1970s, the introduction of the excimer laser allowed refractive surgery to enter a whole new level. The ability of the excimer laser to create precise, clean cuts in the cornea without damaging the surrounding structures led to the improved refractive surgery technique, Photo Refractive Keratectomy (PRK).
Dr. Lusby began his practice in 1983 as PRK surgeries were made available in the United States. He has been at the forefront of the field and has performed thousands of successful PRK surgeries over the last 17 years. By the early 1990s, Keratomileusis and PRK were combined to form the basic concept of LASIK. Since then, advanced lasers, bladeless flap incision, and wavefront-guided and optimized techniques have refined the reliability of LASIK and made it one of the most popular procedures in the United States.
In 1989, Dr. Lusby chose to focus his practice on refractive surgeries and is a LASIK specialist, performing more than 150 procedures a month. He continues to perform PRK surgeries as well as LASIK, Custom LASIK, Intralase®, and more.
Dr. Lusby was born and raised in Maryland where he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Columbia Union College. He moved to Southern California and received his medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine and followed through with his residency at Malden Hospital, a Boston University School of Medicine affiliate. Distinguished among his peers, Dr. Lusby is a sought-after lecturer and has published numerous articles in prestigious medical journals. He has also run refractive surgery workshops for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
